There used to be a time when tennis lovers across the globe eagerly awaited to watch a Grand Slam event, especially the men's singles event because of the fierce competition that we got to see from the male contingent. We had immense level of competition, such that when a Grand Slam started, it was tough to predict a winner. This was the case about 4-5 years ago, when the final of a Grand Slam was so tough to call.
No one could forget the 2008 Wimbledon final between the King of Grass, a Modern Tennis Great, Roger Federer, who seemed at that time, unbeatable on Grass and a youngster from Mallorca, Spain whose never-say-die attitude and immense mental strength earned him a lot of admiration, Rafael Nadal. A gruelling battle of world class tennis was on display as both the men gave it their all and eventually Rafael Nadal had glory.
A Young Serb, Novak Djokovic was beginning to step up at the time when Federer and Nadal were dominating & he proved his worth by winning his first Australian Open title in 2008.
Novak emerged as a stong competitor in the Nad-Fed era, sending signals to the tennis world that he was here to stay. It proved to be difficult.
It was not until we would witness the longest ever Grand Slam final between Djokovic & Nadal which lasted 5 hours 53 minutes, giving Djokovic a hard fought win, that we believed that Novak had the nerves of steal that a champion must have.
Its been a dominating display by Djokovic since then winning Grand Slams, ATP 1000s,ATP world tour finals, not Just winning but outclassing his opponents. With Nadal not up to the mark since his return from injury & Federer slowing down with age, I wonder who will emerge as a challenge to Novak's crown?
While a few names come to mind as The Reigning French Open champion Stan Wawrinka and Japanese Wonder Kei Nishikori but they have to be more consistant in order to challenge Djokovic.
